Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency the site which features video and posts analyzing the portrayals of females in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic that has received accolades for her work. She is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource dedicated to education, which examines women's positions in the pop culture narratives, is her brainchild. The site also has the director of operations. Dispelling stereotypes of women is her primary goals. But, she also highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups who are excluded. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. In addition to being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age she was intrigued with gender issues as well as feminist ideas. As a student, in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to create a web series examining the gender roles in video games and found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. She was not deterred by the harassment, in fact it only reinforced her drive to become an expert on media and feminism. She is a recipient of many awards for her contributions to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. The educational nonprofit explores women's representations in pop culture narratives.
